Dr. Jie Zhang is an Assistant Professor of the School of Computer Science , Peking University. He obtained his Ph.D. from Yonsei University in 2020, under the supervision of Professor Myoungsoo Jung. After that, he spent 1 year in Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) as postdoctoral researcher.
Dr. Zhang’s primary research interests lie in building the bridge between the traditional computer systems and the new memory/storage technologies to better serve the emerging applications such as bigdata, artificial intelligence and scientific computing. His research direction is the key to enabling new levels of performance and efficiency. In his early research career, Dr. Zhang worked on breaking through the bottlenecks of data migration and the limitations of memory walls in the Von Neumann architecture. While targeting for the same direction, his research spans across multiple areas ranging from the storage system to the specialized processor and from the low-level hardware abstracts to the high-level software stacks. In his future research, Dr. Zhang will continue to bring the emerging memory/storage techniques to empower new computer platforms, ranging from cloud-based datacenters to mobile devices, to achieve optimal computing performance. He will also focus on cross-stack innovations to mitigate data migration overhead, which will blur the gap between clouds and mobile devices.
So far, Dr. Zhang has published over 30 papers in top-tier conferences ranging from computer architecture, operating system, parallel computing to storage. He published 9 papers in top-tier conferences ISCA, FAST, HPCA and MICRO. These conferences only accept less than 5 papers from Chinese universities per year. He also published one paper in OSDI. This is the second paper in Korean history. Chinese universities so far only published less than 20 papers in OSDI. His research results are not only highly recognized by the international academic community, but also widely used in industries. His research outputs turn into the commercial products of SK Hynix, Samsung Electronics and MemRay. Dr. Zhang also owns 10 patents. The projects he led have received funds with accumulated total of over 30 million RMB. The funds come from the US Department of Energy, Korea Research Foundation, Samsung Electronics, Hynix, and MemRay.
